Seabourn buck the celebrity trend with new Pursuit godparents

Seabourn has announced the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners as the godparents of their newest ultra-luxury purpose-built expedition ship, the Seabourn Pursuit. The Wunambal Gaambera people are the native title holders of 6.2 million acres of land and maritime space in Australia's North Kimberley region.

The decision to appoint the Wunambal Gaambera Traditional Owners as godparents aligns with Seabourn's belief in the transformative power of travel. By engaging with local communities, Seabourn aims to celebrate their culture and drive sustainable positive change. This choice reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and cultural appreciation, values that resonate with both Seabourn and its guests.

The naming ceremony is scheduled to take place during the June 22 to July 2, 2024 voyage in the Kimberley region of Australia. Representing the Wunambal Gaambera community at the inaugural dedication ceremony aboard the Seabourn Pursuit will be Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation (WGAC) Chairperson Catherine Goonack, Uunguu Ranger and Senior Traditional Owner Desmond Williams, and Senior Traditional Owner Maria Fredericks.

The Wunambal Gaambera people are the Traditional Owners of a region in the Kimberley that includes the sea country of Banjal (Vansittart Bay), Ngula Jar Island, and Yirinni (Hunter River), as well as the freshwater country of Ngauwudu (Mitchell Plateau). The naming ceremony will be held on Ngula Jar Island on the Uunguu Coast.

As part of this partnership, Seabourn will make a donation to support a self-sustaining industry that produces authentic works of art by Wunambal Gaambera artists. This donation, matched by the State Tourism Authority, Tourism Western Australia, will include monetary support as well as supplies such as pearl shells, art materials, and polishing tools. This initiative aims to foster sustainable, commercial art ventures year-round, providing employment opportunities for Wunambal Gaambera artists.
