Rhodes - the best Greek island?
Rhodes combines a rich history, impressive medieval architecture, amazing beaches, and beautiful natural scenery. Rhodes has been inhabited since the Stone Age by many different settlers and communities and the Old Town of Rhodes with its stone-paved alleys and elegant mansions is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It certainly deserves such recognition as one of the best towns to visit in all of Greece; Rhodes is one of the most popular Greek islands to visit and more than one million tourists visit Rhodes every year, usually visiting the island during summertime to make the most of the gorgeous weather.
I went to Rhodes for one week with my partner in mid-April. The weather was stunning, it was around 23ºC everyday which we didn’t expect so early on in the season. We stayed in an all-inclusive 4* hotel called the ‘Blue Sea Beach Resort’, which was situated between Rhodes Old Town and Faliraki. This location was absolutely perfect as it meant we had the beach right on our doorstep and vibrant bars and restaurants close to the hotel, as well as the option to head into the nearby Old Town for a day of exploring.
The hotel was impeccable and I would recommend it to anyone of any age - whether you’re travelling as a couple, with friends, or with your family - to stay here and enjoy the facilities and beautiful surrounding areas. The bus journey from our hotel to Rhodes Old Town only cost us €2.50 each. This makes it a budget friendly destination and the bus journey was so easy with bus stops clearly signed outside the hotel.
So much to do!
One of our favourite things to do during our holiday was to walk to Faliraki along the beach. The walk only took us 20 minutes which was very manageable in the April sunshine, and we especially enjoyed the walk when the sun was going down, as we could watch the sunset over the ocean.
One day, we travelled to Anthony Quinn Bay, which was one of the most stunning beaches that I have ever visited. I would recommend anyone to go and visit this wonderful beach for a few hours in the sun. There was also a restaurant situated at the top of the rocks, where you could sit on swings as your seats, whilst eating a delicious home cooked meal and viewing the beach and surrounding landscape from above.
Rhodes Old Town
During our outing to Rhodes Old Town, we made sure to make the most of our day and visit as many historic sites as we could. We wandered through the cobbled streets admiring the ancient architecture of the buildings, we poked our noses into little trinket shops and bought a few souvenirs to take home, and we climbed up onto the highest walls which acted as the old fortifications. This provided the best views over the harbour and the sea beyond.
When you visit the Old Town, don’t miss the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes (it’s got a very long name!), the Colossus of Rhodes, Saint Athanasios Gate, and Hippocrates Square, which is the perfect place to grab a drink and people watch.
Whilst we were in Rhodes Old Town, we also saw a ship docked in the harbour which was an old Viking-style ship, which was really interesting to see. We could also spot cruise ships docked in the main port and it made me want to explore more of the Greek islands on a luxury cruise holiday!
Evenings in the Old Town looked great too - although we didn’t stay late (as we were staying all-inclusive at our hotel) it looked like a lively place to be, with lovely restaurants, bars, and live singers playing in the streets.
If you’re craving a sunny getaway in Europe or the Mediterranean, I highly recommend a visit to beautiful Rhodes, or even better, a Greek island-hopping cruise with one of our luxury cruise partners!
