Review: An unforgettable European adventure with Holland America

Recently, I had the chance to explore some of Europe’s coastal treasures, with stops in Weymouth, Bilbao and La Coruña. Along the way, I got to experience the ship’s incredible amenities, including a relaxing sea day where I explored the Nieuw Statendam, making the most of all it had to offer. Here’s a look at my journey!

Day 1: All Aboard in Amsterdam

My adventure began in Amsterdam, where I boarded the Nieuw Statendam and was immediately struck by the modern, elegant design. My stateroom had a veranda on deck 10 with amazing ocean views—the perfect spot to start and end each day. After settling in, I wandered around the ship, taking in the luxurious amenities, and stopped by the Lido Market for a casual dinner before catching a live show at the World Stage. There were 24 other cruise agents in my FAM sector, so getting to know them and about their cruising experience was lovely.

Day 2: Seaside Charm in Weymouth, England

Our first stop was the charming seaside town of Weymouth on England’s south coast. With its sandy beach, Georgian architecture and laid-back vibe, it was a perfect introduction to the trip. I started the day with a visit to Nothe Fort, which offered some great views of the bay, and later explored the famous Lulworth Cove with its beautiful turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs. The weather was stunning that day! Back on board that evening, I enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Main Dining Room, reflecting on the day’s adventures as the ship set sail towards Spain.

Day 3: Culture and Cuisine in Bilbao, Spain

From Weymouth, we sailed to Bilbao, the cultural hub of Spain’s Basque Country.

After exploring the bustling city, I made my way to the Old Town for some pintxos, the Basque version of tapas. These little bites, from fresh seafood to cured meatsm were simply unforgettable, and the local larger paired perfectly. With my belly full and my mind buzzing from the day’s culture, I headed back to the ship for some live music and cocktails at B.B. King’s Blues Club. The band was amazing and was the perfect way to end the day.

Day 4: Sea day exploring the Nieuw Statendam

A sea day is always a highlight for me, and the Nieuw Statendam did not disappoint. With no port to explore, I had the whole day to dive into everything the ship had to offer. I started the day with a leisurely breakfast then decided to check out the ship’s casino. I couldn’t resist trying my luck on the slot machines and a round or two of blackjack. A few big wins to start the afternoon off!

After the casino it was time for some sun, so I grabbed a drink at the Lido Bar by the pool. There’s nothing like sipping a cocktail, enjoying the warm breeze, and watching the endless ocean stretch out before you. The atmosphere was relaxed, and I ended up chatting with fellow passengers from the United States as we basked in the sun and had a really good chat. Later, I grabbed lunch from the Dive-In, where the burgers and fries were absolutely on point! In the evening, I caught a performance at the Rolling Stone Rock Room and finished the day with dinner at the Tamarind Restaurant.

Day 5: Exploring La Coruña, Spain

I made sure to sample the local specialty, pulpo a la gallega (octopus with olive oil and paprika), at a cosy café by the harbour. La Coruña’s laid-back vibe and fresh seafood were exactly what I needed after our sea day. It’s a destination that feels off-the-beaten-path, yet offers so much to explore.

Day 6: Portugal and final day

It was the final day of my trip, and I disembarked in Porto with a few hours to spare before my afternoon flight. Just a short walk away from the port, I came across the beautiful Church of São Francisco, a stunning example of Gothic architecture. After admiring its intricate details. I really wasn't ready to go home!

Final Thoughts

This trip aboard Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam was everything I’d hoped for and more. The mix of charming ports, like Weymouth and La Coruña, alongside cultural hotspots like Bilbao and Porto, made for an unforgettable journey. And the ship itself? A destination in its own right! From the amazing entertainment, stunning ship interior, lively casino and incredible dining venues! Every moment aboard was just as memorable as the destinations we visited.

If you’re thinking about a European cruise that combines luxury, culture, and adventure, I highly recommend this itinerary. Whether you’re exploring hidden gems or enjoying a cocktail by the pool on a sea day, the Nieuw Statendam delivers a truly special experience. Until Next Time!
