APT Travelmarvel defied expectations on the Danube

For my first river cruise (actually, my first ever cruise), I had some expectations and a few misconceptions of what I would experience. In the end I could not have had a more amazing experience. Despite only travelling for a few days, quantity does not equate to quality. River cruising proves this.

I ventured to Vienna to meet my ship. After a 40 minute transfer – there she was. Sleek and elegant, the Travelmarvel Polaris stood out amongst the water and the backdrop of stunning mountain scenery. A long ship certainly, but not intimidating in its stature; a quiet aura of sophistication envelops the ship and that is further demonstrated as soon as you step on board.

Staff handling your bags did so with the utmost care and efficiency, ensuring everything is ready waiting for you in your cabin. Muted colours in those cabins really emphasise the scenery through tall glass windows, which are everywhere onboard. A gorgeous view is never too far away.

My cabin

My cabin could not defy preconceptions more. Spacious and equipped with everything you could possibly need, it was more than I expected. Bathrobes, slippers, and an umbrella in case it rains were stored safely in your wardrobe before arrival. There was also an ample-sized bed with more than enough room for one or two to sleep very comfortably, with plenty of storage space and even a safe for all your most valuable belongings.

I was very fortunate indeed to be staying in a French Balcony Cabin. These cabins allow the top half of the panorama window to drop down, creating the illusion of a full balcony. Whilst there is a slight noise as it drops down, the views you experience are breathtaking. Waking up somewhere new with a view everyday was definitely one of the highlights of the trip.

Now, not to make anyone uncomfortable but one of the most surprising aspects to me was the bathroom! These are not little dingy, pokey bathrooms with no room to move; the facilities provided were nothing short of 5* hotel standard. A large walk-in shower allowed enough space to walk around in, with water that stayed warm regardless of the time of day or whether the ship was sailing or not. A vanity featured more than enough space for any makeup or appliances you may bring along with you. It may sound silly, however the bathroom really did defy what I expected.

The food

River cruising is a smaller ship experience and that has to be accepted, less places to dine and see on board. However that does not mean there is little to do. The lounge offers both early and late risers breakfast, as well as lighter lunches and evening entertainment. McGeary's is the Irish Pub at the back of the ship where you can whisk yourself to for Happy Hour, before dinner and also to enjoy a lighter lunch or evening meal.

APT Travelmarvel Polaris Dining Room

The main dining room offers all three courses and is fitted for tables of two up to eight if you desire to sit with friends you have made on board. Four courses that are always different and always delicious. Even for a picky eater like myself, the food was always delightful.

Often in river cruising the term 'meals with drinks only' can really put people off, especially if you are looking for that all inclusive experience. On APT Travelmarvel I can confidently say that there are still plenty of ways to fill your boots. There is a tea/ coffee and water station which is complimentary 24 hours a day.

During Happy Hour drinks are half-price and with meals all drinks are included and yes, this includes Prosecco with breakfast should you wish. Pouring is incredibly generous and you could easily put away a bottle of wine by yourself during dinner. Even outside of those times, if you are not off the ship partaking in a fabulous excursion, then drinks are very reasonably priced with a small beer at €3.40, a glass of coke at €2.00. Cocktails are €7.00. The rest of the menu is similarly priced.

The destination

If you do decide to partake in an excursion, APT Travelmarvel offers complimentary excursions at every port of call. Some ports offer Select More excursions which are a payable extra. Ports which offer these select more excursions include Vienna and Aschach. In Aschach there was the option to go to Strasbourg or Český Krumlov, both payable.

I went to the Český Krumlov excursion and it was the absolute highlight of my entire trip. The transfer from the port to the town took 1 hour 30 minutes. From the town to Passau, where the ship docked for us, it took 1 hour 45 minutes. Both had stops along the way.

Cezky Krumlov

Český Krumlov is a small town in the Czech Republic or Czechia as it is now known. The town is not only a UNESCO world heritage site, but it is downright gorgeous. A fairytale town in every sense of the word. Towering castles, cobbled streets, tightly packed houses winding around the streets, the entire place is simply spectacular. A truly one of a kind place that has to be experienced to fully grasp its magnitude.

One more thing

One thing that I would love to pass on from my experience is the complete lack of movement you experience whilst on board. From sailing, to going through locks, docking and moving away, there was little-to-no movement except for a tiny jolt here and there, however they were so slight they were barely felt.

Being incredibly travel sick I worried about the movement the most and to be on board eating dinner as the ship sails and feel as if you are on board due to the lack of movement was a really spectacular part of the cruise for me.

Whilst certainly not for everyone, I would wholeheartedly recommend experiencing the magic of a river cruise for yourself.
