My Unforgettable Arctic Adventure
Recently, I was lucky enough to embark upon an Arctic voyage with Hapag-Lloyd. From jaw-dropping destinations and inspiring activities, to sumptuous luxury and mouthwatering cuisine, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience from start to finish.
Upon arriving at the maritime metropolis of Hamburg, our luggage was taken care of by the Hapag-Lloyd team, and we were offered the choice between collecting the transfer from the airport to the ship or taking the train into the city centre. I would recommend the latter, as the train is only €6, and speeding through the city as the striking Hamburg skyline blurs by is the perfect way to kick off your trip.
Day 1 – Sailing
Our first day was one of relaxation at sea, as we sailed the Norwegian Fjords from Hamburg to the historic coastal gem of Bergen. Traversing captivating waterfront villages, soaring cliffs and cascading waterfalls is a unique and unforgettable experience – and best of all, we enjoyed it all from the comfort of the ship.
During our voyage, we had the opportunity for a ship visit with the hotel director who has been working on expedition ships for 25 years. The suites are all very spacious, and come with a host of luxurious amenities, including Hapag-Lloyd branded toiletries, and a mini-bar stocked daily with a selection of fresh juices – all complimentary. My favourite suite was the Panoramic Suite with its floor-to-ceiling windows - just imagine pulling back the curtains in the morning, sunlight streaming in, your bedroom a cosy oasis in the middle of the Arctic.
Day 2 - Bergen
Day 2 was a three-hour tour of Bergen, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with so much historic beauty on offer, you won’t know where to look!
Bergen’s most popular excursion is the Fløibanen funicular railway, which meanders all the way up Mount Fløyen where you can marvel at panoramic views, explore the famous ‘Troll Forest’, or amble around peaceful nature trails. The train costs approximately £10, and you can enjoy a delicious meal at the summit, before taking advantage of the incredible photo opportunities.
If you don’t fancy a mountaintop jaunt, there is plenty of fun to be had at ground level. We began with a relaxed stroll up the iconic Hanseatic main street, lined with postcard-perfect colourful wooden houses, before visiting the imposing Bergenhus Fortress, and exploring some of the town’s museums.
Our afternoon was spent taking it easy at sea, where we relaxed and sampled the delectable afternoon tea and homemade ice cream (of which there is a new selection of flavours daily!)
Food aboard the ship was all deliciously fresh, with ample choice, and menus that change every day. Their variety of dining options include gourmet fare, seven-course feasts, vegetarian options, and diverse cuisine, including French, Italian, and Asian dishes.
Day 4 – Alesund
We woke up to find ourselves in an enchanting landscape of snow and ice, so we were sure to wrap up warm before plunging into our adventure of the day!
We spent the morning kayaking, cutting through the sea alongside the charming pastel-coloured houses on the waterfront. It was freezing, so I was glad of our extra-warm clothing, boots, and gloves - all provided by Hapag-Lloyd. This was my favourite day of the entire trip and was truly an unforgettable experience! I could never have imagined myself kayaking on icy waters, dusted by the snow falling all around, but I would do it again in a heartbeat!
Day 5 – Torghatten and Tromso
On our fifth day, we cruised by the legendary Torghatten – a towering mountain with a hole straight through the middle, and the beating heart of much Norwegian folklore - on our way to my favourite place, Tromso, with its unique blend of natural beauty and urban allure.
The ship docked right in the centre of town; we literally stepped off the ship and everything was right there at our fingertips. From the fascinating Polar Museum and captivating Arctic Cathedral, to waiting for a glimpse of the Northern Lights, or simply taking in the beauty of the fjords, we were truly spoilt for choice on the final stop of our voyage.
The highlight of my cruise would have to be crossing the Arctic Circle as we journeyed through the Norwegian fjords. There was celebration, champagne, and certificates – it’s something I will always remember. For anyone considering an Arctic cruise, I would urge you to DO IT! You’ll never have an adventure quite like it.
