Top 5 Mediterranean cruising destinations

The Mediterranean is top of most people’s lists for holidays and cruises alike. Full of charming towns, glittering beaches, vibrant cities, and clifftop fortresses, no port lining the Mediterranean Sea is the same.

With a balmy climate almost all year round, the Mediterranean coast consists of 21 countries, giving visitors plenty of choice when it comes to choosing what kind of holiday or experience they’re after. Fancy yachting around the Greek Isles? Partying in Croatia? Learning about ancient history and archaeology in Italy? Wine-tasting take your fancy in Southern France or Spain? Whatever motivates you to book your cruise, the Mediterranean has it all.

Here, I have pulled together a few favourites, including some which are often overlooked in favour of their bigger and more bling-y neighbours. Take a look and see if there’s any you fancy visiting next…

Rovinj, Croatia

No Eastern Mediterranean voyage is complete without stopping along the idyllic Dalmatian coast. Everyone knows about the fortified historical city of Dubrovnik, and the exuberant and thriving beach town of Split, but one of the best destinations to visit in Croatia is Rovinj.

A glowing jewel of the Mediterranean, and jutting out spectacularly on a dazzling peninsula, Rovinj encompasses all the charm and romanticism of its traditional fishing port roots, with its quaint Old Town, cobbled streets, and iconic bell tower likened to Venice. During peak season, the 14 islands of the Rovinj archipelago make for the perfect escape from any unwanted crowds. For the history buffs out there, a 30-minute journey out of Rovinj will take you to the nearby town of Pula, famous for its beautiful beaches and extraordinary Roman ruins; it has the only remaining Roman amphitheatre in the world to have all four towers entirely preserved.

Mykonos, Greece

Glitz and glamour await at arguably the most luxurious destination within the Greek Isles: Mykonos. Often overlooked on luxury yacht cruises, I am constantly fascinated by Mykonos’ authentic Greek charm contrasted with its vibrant and ultra-chic night life. Marvel at the blinding white villas set against the blue ocean backdrop as you sip on a cocktail, indulge in delicious Baklava, and dip your toes in the warm Mediterranean Sea. Perfect for couples retreating from the bustle of everyday life, while also catering to families with a variety of fun activities and water sports, Mykonos has something for everyone.

Kusadasi, Turkey

Despite nearby Ephesus holding fame for being the site of one of the Ancient Wonders of the World, Kusadasi is a town rich in its own spectacular history and culture. Avid history lovers will be blown away by the ancient Greek Temple of Artemis and Kusadasi Castle perched on Pigeon Island; families will be in for a day of fun at Tortuga water park; couples might soak up the relaxing experience of a Turkish Hammam spa; while a longer stay in Kusadasi will enable visitors to take a day trip to the world-famous mineral thermal springs at Pamukkale, an ancient Roman spa dating back to 190BC.

Kotor, Montenegro

Perhaps one of the lesser-known Mediterranean countries, Montenegro is a beautiful little oasis nestled between Croatia, Bosnia, and Albania. Full to the brim with lush forests, gorgeous beaches, and majestic mountains, Montenegro is sure to become the next European hotspot.

Visiting Kotor is like travelling back in time; its traditional houses and medieval ramparts hark back to the old town’s intriguing history. Dubrovnik may be the place to go for bling and pizzazz and Budva might be Montenegro’s best beach destination, but Kotor’s laidback ambience makes it the perfect port of call for a relaxing day strolling around the cobblestone streets and sipping sweet coffee.

Chania, Crete

Crete is the largest and one of the most popular Greek islands, and for good reason. Its ancient history, rugged coastlines, and remnants of Venetian and Ottoman architecture make Crete an incredibly exciting and educational place to visit.

Chania, a large port in the northwest, is home to a beautiful Venetian harbour and Firkas fortress, the perfect viewpoint for a summery Greek sunset. Chania’s historic charm and mellow, pastel-coloured buildings are punctuated by pretty criss-crossing streets dotted with old-style tavernas and cafes. Even in the winter, the city retains its charm as indie boutiques, warm restaurants, and various museums provide welcome entertainment to Chania’s visitors.

I love the variety of destinations you can find in the Mediterranean. There is something so iconic about cruising the Greek Islands or the Dalmatian Coast.
