Top 10 tips for solo cruisers

Solo cruising may be an intimidating prospect, as people may think travelling without a companion could be lonely, but that couldn't be further from the truth! You will be surrounded by a network of people who share common interests, the desire to explore the world and create lifelong memories.

So why not push yourself out of your comfort zone, meet new people and explore new cultures? We have created some top tips to help you make the most of this opportunity. We’ve also outlined a few of the best cruise lines offering no single supplements and catering to solo cruisers just as equals to coupled cruisers.

1.What is a solo supplement in cruising?

A single supplement refers to when a single traveller only pays a “single” price.

If a cruise line says ‘no single supplement’, that means you are paying for two people in a double room (full price) rather than just yourself. Cunard offers solo staterooms aboard the Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth ships however also offer the opportunity to book a more spacious double suite for a single supplement, meaning you don’t pay extra. Riverside Luxury Cruises provide no solo supplements on every itinerary.

Solo supplements are important when booking your cruise, as certain cruise lines are better catered for solo travellers and offer better deals and prices.

2. Socialise on board

A significant number of cruise lines offer gala events and social get-togethers on board their ship as a way to encourage solo travellers to engage with each other and create relationships with fellow guests. Holland America prioritise solo travellers and take it upon themselves to act like Cupid—they run a single partner programme which includes various bonding activities aboard which allows you to relax and immerse yourself in a social setting.

3. … Or enjoy the tranquillity

Although cruise lines encourage you to engage with fellow guests, they also understand people solo cruise for a relaxing time and a chance to unwind. Make the most of the various facilities aboard the ships, many have a wellness and spa centre allowing you to escape from reality and enjoy the various treatments available.

4. Get to know the crew

Whilst you’re on board, the staff want to ensure you have the best time and are there to help and support you. We know the crew can either make or break a holiday, which is why our cruise partners ensure the highest quality service from all members of staff, who are dedicated to provide you with a level of luxury and opulence.

Silversea, amongst many others, offer a personalised butler experience in all suites, which caters to your needs and preferences.

5. Look at off-peak season cruises

Several cruise lines offer special solo fares in the off-peak season, as weather is not a guarantee but lower prices are!

Depending on destinations, peak times will vary so make sure to do your research if you are looking for discounted rates. A bonus of attending a cruise in “shoulder season” rather than peak season is that you have the opportunity to explore the heart of destinations without the massive tourist queues.

6. Join online forums

Before you embark on your solo cruise, why not join some online forums, such as Facebook groups, to meet and engage with those you will be sharing your journey with. Panache Cruises have our own Solo Sailors facebook group which gives you the opportunity to ask questions and receive answers from people who may have more experience solo travelling.

You can join Cruise Critic’s roll call; a forum for all cruisers to meet fellow shipmates.

7. Research which cruise lines offer single cabins

The choice of single cabins continuously grows amongst cruise lines:

  • Oceania Cruises has a wide range of cabins for solo travellers to choose from, the Level Solo Veranda Staterooms are available aboard the Vista ship providing a spacious room for you to relax in

  • Aboard the Emerald Star ships, there are single occupancy staterooms available.

8. Ask the cruise director to introduce other singles

If you’re worried about making friends onboard your solo cruise, then simply find the cruise director and ask whether they can set up a social event or introduce you to other solo guests on board.

Don’t be shy to ask; it could be the difference between enjoying your trip or not!

9. Remember you’re more approachable as a solo traveller

When embarking on your solo cruise, remember to be confident and not to shy away from activities because you’re alone. If anything it will work in your favour, as people may be more inclined and comfortable to strike up a conversation with you.

10. Book a few shore excursions/activities

Taking part in group activities will allow you to bond and form relationships with other guests whilst you’re ashore; easier than if you’re on board, as you can let loose and revel in a range of fun enriching activities.
