Holland America Announces Their Biggest Ever Refurbishment Project
With over 150 years of cruising experience and hordes of loyal guests under their belts, you’d forgive Holland America for putting their feet up, sailing well-worn paths around the globe on ships that many cruisers have come to regard as second homes.
However, resting on their laurels is not the Holland America way—that’s why they have just announced the most expansive fleet upgrade in the line’s history, Holland America Evolution.

If you’ve been keeping up with Holland America, you may be familiar with their three newest (and largest) ships, Rotterdam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam, which together comprise the Pinnacle Class. These vessels really took the line’s offering to new heights, with an ultra-spacious, modern design, larger staterooms and premium dining experiences.
Now, six of Holland America’s older ships will be receiving the Pinnacle treatment as part of a $500 million stern-to-bow refurbishment project, doubling down on the things they do best whilst introducing new features and a refreshed, contemporary design for an even more luxurious cruising experience.
Kicking things off is Oosterdam, who will be heading to Italy’s Fincantieri shipyard (the birthplace of every Holland America ship) for her makeover, ready to set sail again in Autumn 2027. Oosterdam’s three sisters, Zuiderdam, Westerdam and Noordam will also get to experience the Evolution effect, followed by the line’s Signature Class ships, Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam.
So…what’s the plan for these vessels?
Well, if you’ve been lucky enough to sail aboard a Pinnacle Class ship, there’s a good chance you still dream about the stroopwafels and bitterballen served daily in The Grand Dutch Café. If so, you’re in luck as this cosy eatery is set to appear on the Vista and Signature Class ships as well. On top of this addition, all public spaces are set for a refresh, with integrated modern design elements, inspired by the line’s Pinnacle Class.

Elsewhere, you’ll find an enhanced accommodation offering, with several new staterooms set to be added, including some all-new suite categories. The most impressive of these is doubtless the Pinnacle Suite, with 1,550 square feet of living space made up of a bedroom with ensuite, a separate living room, walk-in closet, a powder room and a private balcony. There will also be a handful of 900-square-foot Bridgeview Suites for perfect 180° views, as well as stylish Vista Suites and Solo Verandahs, so that those travelling alone can do it in style with a private balcony, dedicated workspace and glass-walled shower.

Most importantly of all, Holland America are homing in on fleetwide sustainability measures, reusing materials as part of the refurbishment and developing power management technology for maximum efficiency and a reduction of carbon intensity.
“Our guests have been very clear about what they love about our ships and what they want to see more of and Holland America Evolution is our answer to that,” said Beth Bodensteiner, president of the Holland America Line. “This investment allows us to introduce experience and venues that are new to the fleet, add Pinnacle Class favourites like Grand Dutch Café and create new stateroom categories designed for the way people travel today, all while preserving the perfectly sized ship experience that defines Holland America. We’re just getting started. Over the coming months, we’ll unveiling several more exciting additions to Oosterdam as well as the other five ships that are part of this evolution.”

Oosterdam will make her post-makeover debut in Autumn 2027—and that’s just the beginning. Each Vista and Signature Class ship is due to be thoughtfully reimagined, the end goal being to bring the entire fleet in line with Holland America’s Pinnacle Class. Watch this space for updates….
