Green River Cruising

We are all aware that climate change is an issue in our lives and the need to be more sustainable is ever growing. This is why many cruise lines have taken the initiative to make themselves ‘greener’ and even strive for carbon neutrality in the coming years.

The concept of the cruise industry being ‘eco-friendly’ and sustainable may seem strange and something that many of us may see as an idea that may not even be possible. However, many cruise lines like Uniworld are making it their mission to take steps to do better environmentally and protect our planet. Do you believe it is possible to make the cruise industry sustainable for good?

It is often spoken about in terms of Ocean cruising with ships such as Silversea’s Silver Nova however many river cruise lines are also focusing on it too, but at varying levels to one another.

Uniworld believe that ‘travel can and should be used for good’ which influences their collective mission to safeguard people, wildlife and the planet for generations to come. In 2008 they began their campaign to become more eco-friendly and better themselves in terms of sustainability and looking after the planet and over the past 14 years this has enabled them to become one of the main cruise lines leading the way in making cruising better for the environment.

This makes Uniworld the perfect cruise line for anyone who is conscious about their carbon footprint and making a positive impact in changing the way the cruise industry treats the planet.

It could be arguable that turning the whole cruise industry sustainable and making it eco-friendly is going to work without having an impact on the experience on the ships.

Carbon Neutrality by 2030 or Sooner

Striving towards carbon neutrality in 2030 is a stage of Uniworld's 5 step plan in order to better, not only, themselves but others too. In terms of cruising this will mean that net-zero carbon dioxide emissions when travelling- therefore no waste into the oceans or the atmosphere!

One of the many initiatives taken on board is to remove all single-use plastic and have replaced water bottles with flasks that can be refilled onboard the ship. This is just one of the simple ways that Uniworld are showing the rest of the cruise industry and in particular river cruise lines how to make small changes that will overall make cruising more sustainable.

Project Vesta

Uniworld support many projects-project vesta being one of them. They are on a mission to harness the natural power of the oceans in order to remove a trillion tonnes of excess carbon dioxide from the world's atmosphere. By using the oceans natural power, they equally help the ocean and the past effects of climate change and built-up carbon emissions. This is just one of the innovating ways Uniworld are taking steps forward in paving the way for sustainable cruising that is truly admirable.
