Sun, History and Mediterranean Magic
If you're looking for a holiday destination that effortlessly blends sunshine, rich history, beautiful landscapes and mouth-watering food, Paphos in Cyprus is a true hidden gem worth discovering. Whether you're an adventurer, a culture enthusiast, a sunseeker or a foodie, Paphos offers a little something for everyone. Here's why this gorgeous place should be next on your travel bucket list.
First things first: the weather in Paphos is incredible. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, you can visit any time and expect warm temperatures and blue skies. Whether you're lounging by the sea in summer or strolling through archaeological sites in the cooler winter months, the climate makes every day feel like a holiday.
One of the most fascinating places to visit is the Tombs of the Kings which is an UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s a must-see for history lovers. Entry is very affordable, and the experience is unforgettable. The tombs are carved into solid rock, dating back to the 4th century BC, and wandering through the open-air ruins makes you feel like you've stepped into another world. It’s the perfect spot for explorers who love ancient history and photography.

Don’t miss a visit to the charming Old Town of Paphos. It’s an ideal place for a relaxing day out with a little shopping and wandering. The markets here are full of character, offering everything from local fashion items to handmade souvenirs that make for perfect keepsakes or gifts. The area is rich in culture, with cute boutiques, traditional Cypriot craftsmanship and friendly locals who are always happy to help. Just a 30 minute walk away from this is the cruise port! We came across EXPLORA I whilst we were there and enjoyed a drink watching the sun going down over the port. The port was much smaller than I expected it to be, it was a very intimate port nestled right beside the old harbour. Unlike the overwhelming, industrial-sized ports in larger cities, Paphos’ cruise port is small, scenic, and incredibly welcoming. Whether you’re arriving by cruise ship or just visiting the harbour area, the atmosphere here feels warm and personal, a perfect introduction to the laid-back pace of Cypriot life.
The harbour itself is a great place to stroll at sunset, with yachts bobbing in the water, locals fishing from the pier and seaside cafes offering the perfect spot to sip on a cold drink and watch the world go by. From here, you're just steps away from some of Paphos’ top attractions, including the Paphos Castle, archaeological park, and a string of waterfront restaurants.

If you're arriving in Paphos by cruise, this port offers an easy and stress-free disembarkation, putting you right in the heart of the action, no long transfers or crowded terminals. It’s one of the many things that makes Paphos feel both accessible and intimate, even when arriving from afar.
If there’s one thing you won’t forget about Paphos, it’s the food. Cypriot and Greek cuisine dominate the local scene, and the portions are absolutely huge - you’ll never leave a restaurant hungry! One dish you must try is the Gyros which is a classic, flavorful street food staple made with rotisserie-cooked meat, fresh salad, and warm pita bread. It's simple, satisfying, and full of flavour.

A culinary highlight of our trip was a visit to The Lodge, a South African-style restaurant located near the harbour. From the moment we walked in, we were blown away by the stunning decor and warm atmosphere. The food in this restaurant was absolutely phenomenal. We started with an array of starters such as delicious mussels, escargot, halloumi and more that set the tone for the rest of the meal. For the main course, the surf and turf was a standout for me. Perfectly cooked steak paired with succulent prawns, all beautifully presented and bursting with flavour. If you’re in Paphos, do not miss this spot.
For nature lovers and those looking to venture beyond the town, two must-see spots are the Blue Lagoon and Aphrodite’s Rock. The Blue Lagoon is an enchanting spot only accessible by boat or off-road vehicle, known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters. Swimming here feels like a dream, and the scenery is perfect for those Instagram-worthy travel shots. Aphrodite’s Rock, or Petra tou Romiou, is steeped in mythology and beauty. Legend says this is the birthplace of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, and it’s easy to see why. The rock formations and sweeping sea views create a magical, almost otherworldly experience.
After all the exploring, Paphos offers plenty of opportunities to unwind and relax. There are countless beaches to choose from, ranging from family-friendly sandy shores to quiet coves perfect for couples. The peaceful pace of life here makes it easy to relax and soak in the serenity of your surroundings.
If you're dreaming of a destination that ticks every box from history and culture to adventure and fine dining, Paphos should be at the top of your list. Whether you're wandering through ancient ruins, dining in world-class cuisine, or floating in the azure waters of the Mediterranean, Paphos is a place that captures the heart and keeps you coming back for more.
