Why this charming Dutch capital has something for everyone

From winding canals and world-famous museums to tasty pastries and unique experiences, Amsterdam had everything that a European city should have. Whether you're an art lover, foodie, family traveler, or partygoer - there's no shortage of ways to enjoy the Dutch capital.

Here are five unmissable things I did, saw, and ate in Amsterdam — your one-stop guide to experiencing the best the city has to offer.

1. Step Into History: Anne Frank House

We began our Amsterdam journey with a visit to the Anne Frank House, one of the city’s most poignant and essential historical sites. This museum offered a deeply moving look into the life of Anne Frank and the realities of what people went through in the wartime in Amsterdam. You get to walk through the secret annex where Anne and her family hid and see her original diary on display. My guide would be to book tickets in advance online as they do sell out very quickly.

2. Indulging in Amsterdam’s Sweet Side: Cafés & Pastries

One of the highlights of our time in Amsterdam was exploring the city’s sweet side. From warm stroopwafels to cozy cafes tucked along the canals, Amsterdam has a way of turning even a quick snack into a memorable experience.

We started with the classic stroopwafel - thin waffle cookies filled with caramel. When they’re made fresh (and still warm!), they’re absolutely incredible. We also tried the famous Dutch appeltaart, which is a deeper, spiced version of apple pie. The slice we had at Winkel 43 came piled high and topped with whipped cream.

And then there’s the crookie—a buttery croissant filled with a gooey chocolate chip cookie dough center. Yes, it’s as over-the-top (and delicious) as it sounds. These creative pastries have been popping up all over the city, and they’re perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Of course, no sweet outing is complete without a good coffee. Luckily, Amsterdam is full of great cafes, whether you prefer minimalist espresso bars or inviting spots filled with greenery.

3. Chill (Literally) at the Icebar Amsterdam

This was hands-down one of our favorite experiences in Amsterdam. From the moment we arrived, the energy was high - our lively host set the tone before we were suited up with thermal coats and gloves. Then came the big freeze: stepping into a room chilled to a brisk -9°C, where everything - from the walls to the glasses we drank from - is made entirely of ice.

It’s a fun, interactive experience that’s perfect for groups of friends or couples looking for something a little different to do after dinner. With cool lighting, upbeat music, and ice-cold drinks served in literal ice glasses, it’s one of those unique stops that you’ll be talking about long after the trip.

4. Connect with Nature & Wildlife at ARTIS Zoo

No holiday feels complete without a visit to the zoo, and in Amsterdam, ARTIS Zoo was the perfect escape from the city buzz. We hopped on a tram and were pleasantly surprised by how smooth and reliable the public transport was all over Amsterdam - easily one of the best public transport experiences I’ve had while traveling.

Tucked into the Plantage neighborhood, ARTIS is an amazing zoo. It’s home to a wide variety of exotic animals, a lush butterfly pavilion, an impressive aquarium, and even a planetarium - all set within landscaped gardens. Whether you’re traveling with kids or not, it’s a peaceful, green space where you can slow down and watch the wildlife.

It’s an ideal way to spend a day, strolling through shaded paths and soaking up a side of Amsterdam that’s calm, curious, and interactive - but also perfect for couples or solo travelers looking for something different.

5. Eat, Drink & Wander: Something for Every Taste
Our favourite thing about Amsterdam was the food. Amsterdam’s food and drink scene truly has something for everyone - whether you’re after a leisurely canalside meal, a quick bite between sights, or a late-night snack after exploring the city.

One of our favorite dining experiences was at Black and Blue, a stylish yet cozy spot known for its grilled steaks and lobster, all served with a canal view. For something lighter, Chun in the city center is a must-visit. Their Korean-inspired brunches and beautifully plated sandwiches are as delicious as they are photogenic.

When pizza cravings hit, we had two standouts: Mangia Pizza, a warm, welcoming Italian eatery with traditional wood-fired pies, and Pizza Beppe, a certified Neapolitan pizzeria serving up some of the most authentic slices in town.

Looking for something a little more fun? Oh My Bun delivers that - with fluffy bao buns stuffed with bold, flavorful fillings. It’s casual, creative, and perfect for a quick, tasty lunch. And of course, no visit to Amsterdam is complete without a stop at FEBO, the iconic Dutch snack wall where you can grab croquettes, burgers, and other hot bites straight from a vending machine. It’s quirky, convenient, and surprisingly satisfying - especially after a day of exploring

Whether you’re gluten-free, plant-based, or a meat-lover, Amsterdam’s food scene makes it easy to eat well and discover something new every day.
