Ponant unveils new zero-emissions ship design

After Hurtigruten’s recent announcement for their zero-emissions ship, Ponant is not far behind. They’ve just released mock-ups of their futuristic expedition cruise ship which promises to be zero-emissions amongst other things.

Ponant continues to lead the way in maritime innovation by committing to a groundbreaking transoceanic ship design that supports the journey towards carbon neutrality. The company's research and development team has developed a pioneering concept that combines six revolutionary technologies, set to redefine the future of seaward navigation.

This ship, Le Ponant,  is scheduled for completion by 2030. It aims to serve as a catalyst for new energy solutions not only for Ponant, but also for the entire cruise industry. While Ponant has once again partnered with navald architecture firm Stirling Design International, ongoing discussions are being held to select the shipyard responsible for constructing this highly evolved and cutting-edge vessel.

"By 2030, our future ship aims to have zero greenhouse gas emissions when sailing, manoeuvring, in port or at anchor. Her carbon footprint will be reduced throughout her life cycle. Renewable energy supplied by the wind and sun will be combined with low-carbon non-fossil energy associated with fuel cells"

- Hervé Gastinel, CEO of Ponant

The upcoming generation of eco-designed PONANT ships will represent a significant milestone in achieving our ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions. With approximately one hundred staterooms and an overall length of 181 metres, PONANT's future sailing ship is spearheading a new era in the maritime industry.

Bound to be compliant with the latest European and international regulations on greenhouse gas emissions, Ponant is embracing an unparalleled eco-design approach. They’re revolutionising ship-building by carefully selecting equipment and materials based on a comprehensive life cycle analysis, extending to and beyond the recycling of waste as fuel.

This is a cruise ship revolution that puts sustainability at the heart of the project, and at Panache Cruises we’re absolutely here for it.
