What is the Made in Norway award?

To win this exclusive label you need to demonstrate how your company is taking responsibility to preserve the environment and takes firm steps towards sustainability, with the aim to achieve a cleaner future. An extremely high quality of services and products are demonstrated aboard Hurtigruten voyages, showcasing the natural origin of Norway. These allow guests to capture the beauty embedded in Norway, and to experience the heart and culture of Hurtigruten’s Scandinavian motherland.

Hurtigruten is a company motivated by sustainability, working towards a low emission future which reduces the risks to both people and society. These motives are driven by the desire to protect and preserve their home—the Norwegian Coast. The cruise line has created a Sea Zero scheme which helps them to tackle these issues.

The Sea Zero Scheme (and a new ship!)

Hurtigruten are embarking on a journey to create a cleaner future. They aim to build their first zero emission ship by 2030. They will be utilising new technology and creating new design ideas to build these new ships. Possible design features of the ship include:

• Retractable wind and solar sails

• Smart cabins with real time energy monitoring

• Underwater air lubrication system

This showcases the dedication and drive that is embedded in Hurtigruten to benefit not only the environment but society too. In fact, the importance of being sustainable is shown throughout Hurtigruten’s investments into environmental upgrades. Approximately £100 million has gone into upgrading and transforming their current fleets as they will now run off hybrid electric power. These changes assure that CO2 emissions will have been cut by 25% in time for 2025.

Hurtigruten ditched the utilisation of single use plastic on board their ships back in 2018, making them the first cruise line to do so. Guests will now receive a reusable aluminium water bottle on arrival that they will use for their time on the cruise. There are stations throughout the ship allowing you to fill your water bottle up as you please. This change made by Hurtigruten will help tackle the long-term issue and danger of having mass plastic waste in the ocean.

This again highlights the significance of sustainability and the fact the environment is the heart of Hurtigruten’s business.
